Borgward Boxer of the 2017 World Championships – Uzbekistan’s Shakhram Giyasov (69kg)

Uzbekistan’s new Welterweight World Champion Shakhram Giyasov has been named the Borgward Boxer of the Tournament following the 2017 AIBA World Championships in Hamburg. The 24-year-old talent went into the competition as top seed following his brilliant gold in Tashkent at the ASBC Championships in May, and his confidence was clear from the outset in Hamburg as he dominated the weight category with a series of superb performances. Following an online poll among AIBA’s followers, Giyasov’s flamboyant style also saw him comfortable winner of the Borgward Boxer of the Tournament vote.

Giyasov’s title-winning campaign got off to an excellent start with a unanimous points win over Ukraine’s Ievgenii Barbanov on Day Four, setting up a tricky Quarter-Final encounter with England’s Pat McCormack. The two technically excellent boxers put on three superb rounds of Welterweight action, the momentum swinging from corner to corner before the Uzbek’s more attacking instincts were rewarded with the points win.

In the last four, Giyasov faced Kazakhstan’s Ablaikhan Zhussopov, and eventually emerged from a tough encounter with a split-decision win that saw him into the final against Roniel Iglesias. Cuba’s former Olympic and World Champion has never quite recaptured his Light Welterweight magic from London 2012, and struggled against the Uzbek’s relentless waves of attacks. Giyasov showed no sign of nerves as he closed in on the title and enjoyed the final three minutes, turning up the style to secure a huge victory and a hard-earned World Championships gold medal.
