The winners of the 39 preliminary bouts advanced to the quarter-finals at the EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro after the third day of competition.

Boxers at the women’s flyweight (50kg), bantamweight (54kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (63kg), welterweight (66kg), middleweight (75kg), as well as the men’s minimumweight (48kg), flyweight (51kg) and super heavyweight (+92kg) competed in their preliminary bouts on Day 3.

Women’s lightweight stars in action

The women’s lightweight (60kg) is one of the high-quality weight category at the tournament with a number of experienced athletes onboard. Romania’s Loredana Andreea Marin is the titleholder of this weight class and she controlled all three rounds against Belarus’ younger hope, Darya Letsko. She was followed by Czech Republic’s Veronika Gajdova who claimed bronze at the Kielce 2021 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and created distance advantage against Poland’s Julianna Rutkowska. The top favorite of the category, Russia’s two-time EUBC European Junior Champion Nadezhda Golubeva eliminated Cyprus’ only women Iliana Hadjivasiliou.

Two Swedish women advanced to the quarter-finals

Sweden arrived at the venue of the EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships with three talented girls and all of them competed on Day 3. Their EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships silver medallist Duna Sipel had a surprise loss to Moldova’s Cristina Chiper in the lightweight (60kg), but 18-year-old Zehra Milli used her strength to win the first bout for Sweden. Milli dominated the first round against Serbia’s Kristina Markovic and she decided the contest in the second with strong punches. Following Milli’s RSC success, 17-year-old Lucin Seropian impressed in a fight against another Serbian girl, Anastasija Nikolovski. The Swedish talent won all of the three rounds in each scorecard.

Three wins for Turkish women

Turkey has an amazing elite women’s team and their youth talents are trying to follow those footsteps to be champions in Budva. Asude Deniz Ece moved down to the lightweight (63kg) and the EUBC European Junior Champion opened her campaign successfully against Poland’s Dagmara Kaliszan. Yaren Cam Nilay had to work hard against Greece’s Eleni Cholidi in the flyweight (50kg) but her last round delivered for her also a place in the quarter-finals. A third Turkish girl, Ayse Dogan also succeeded, she defeated Italy’s Damiana Trischitta in the welterweight (66kg).

Rafael Lozano Serrano is on his father’s way

Rafael Lozano Serrano is a 17-year-old Spanish talent who spent all of his life in boxing gyms and he is trying to follow his father’s pathway. His father is Rafael Lozano Munoz, the only Spanish boxer who claimed two medals at the Olympic Games. His son was a silver medalist at the 2020 EUBC Junior European Boxing Championships and won the youth tournaments in recent months. Lozano has got excellent technical skills, strong defence and his hooks are tough to beat his opponents but he has to do his very best immediately in the preliminary stage of the minimumweight (48kg) against Armenia’s Tumas Tovmasyan.

The longest preliminary day with 48 bouts will be held in the fourth competition day at the EUBC Youth European Boxing Championships. Male talents in the bantamweight (54kg), featherweight (57kg), lightweight (60kg), light welterweight (63.5kg), welterweight (67kg) and light middleweight (71kg) will be boxing for the quarter-finals on Day 4.
