The International Olympic Committee extended the age limits of the boxing event of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee amended the age requirements of the boxing tournament of the Tokyo Olympic Games. The age limits have been amended by one year in the upcoming qualification events and the Olympic Games itself. Minor changes have been done in several sports in the qualification criteria for the Tokyo Olympic Games announced by the International Olympic Committee.

The new extended age limit is 41 years in the boxing event of the Olympic Games. Boxers who were born between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 2002 are eligible to attend in the qualification tournaments and in the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Altogether 112 boxers from 43 nations already qualified for the boxing tournament of the Tokyo Olympic Games. 174 quota places are still outstanding for the Olympic Games in boxing which will be decided in the upcoming qualification events in 2021. The deadline of the new qualification period for the Olympic Games in June 29 in 2021.

The revision of the qualification system does not affect boxing, the same process will be held in 2021 as initially approved by the IOC Boxing Task Force. The President of the International Olympic Committee Mr. Thomas Bach, the President of the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee Mr. Yoshiro Mori, the Olympic Minister Mr. Seiko Hashimoto, and the Governor of Tokyo Mr. Yuriko Koike had an important virtual meeting a few months ago.

Following their conversation, the new date of the Tokyo Olympic Games has been announced and will be held between July 23 and August 8 in 2021.
